The Pinterest–Etsy Obsession: Why We’re All Out Here Pretending to Be Interior Designers

Because hiring a real one costs money… and delusion is free.

Look, some people can walk into a room and instantly know the perfect layout, color palette, and curated décor that whispers “effortlessly elevated.”
The rest of us are sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, surrounded by Amazon boxes, whispering to ourselves:

“I can totally make my house look like that Pinterest board.”

No you can’t.
But it’s adorable that we try.

Let’s talk about the very real, very hilarious journey of designing your home when your budget is $74 and your confidence is…far too high.

1. The Pinterest Spiral That Destroys Your Self-Esteem

You open the app “just for inspiration.”
Suddenly you’re knee-deep in Scandinavian minimalism, Japandi serenity, boho-chic relaxation, coastal grandmother vibes, and rustic farmhouse energy… all in the same hour.

You save 42 pins.

Do you have the space, budget, or lifestyle for any of them?
Absolutely not.

But your board looks amazing.

2. The Etsy Delusion: “I Could Totally Make That Myself.”

You see a $68 handmade clay vase on Etsy.
You consider buying it… then your ego kicks in.

“It’s just clay. I can make that.”

Fast-forward 90 minutes:

  • There's flour on your counter for no reason

  • Your “clay” looks like a sad, wet dumpling

  • You have a new and profound respect for the artisans of the world

And yes… you end up buying the vase.

3. The DIY Overconfidence Stage

You watch one YouTube video on limewash paint and suddenly you’re Chip and Joanna Gaines’ long-lost cousin.
You’ve got a paintbrush in your hair.
There’s painter’s tape on the dog.
Someone walks in and asks, “What’s the plan?”
And you say the same thing every home-enthusiast says:

“I don’t really have a plan yet.”

Famous last words.

4. When the Vision in Your Head Doesn’t Match the Vision in Real Life

Pinterest board: calming neutrals, warm tones, architectural balance
Your living room:

  • A lamp that clashes with everything

  • Two throw pillows in a fight

  • A rug that absolutely does not fit the room

  • A blanket that screams “Target impulse buy”

The vibes are off.
The room is confused.
You are confused.

But we keep going.

5. The Great Return Pile

You bought half your décor assuming it would “probably work.”
It didn’t.
Now it’s sitting by the front door in a shame pile waiting to go back to HomeGoods, Target, At Home, Amazon, or all of the above.

Will you return it?
Maybe.
Someday.
When the stars align.

6. The One Thing We Do Get Right

Even without a designer… even with mismatched chairs and a “DIY” shelf that leans dangerously left…
your home still feels like you.

Because you picked it.
You created it.
And every little chaotic choice has a story.

That charm?
You can’t buy that on Etsy.

Could an interior designer fix everything?

Absolutely.
But until that day comes, you and Pinterest are going to continue this delusional but passionate relationship — one imperfect gallery wall at a time.
